17th-Century French Engraving by Adam Perelle, Hôtel de Dangeau
Artwork
Original 17th-century French engraving by Adam Perelle (1638–1695), published in Paris circa 1675–1690.
Titled La Perspective dans la Maison de Monsieur le Marquis de Dangeau, the engraving depicts an architectural perspective within the Hôtel de Dangeau, a Parisian residence located on the Place Royale, now known as the Place des Vosges.
The composition features a classical colonnade, Ionic pilasters, sculptural niches and balustrades arranged along a symmetrical perspective leading toward a temple in the distance. Figures throughout the foreground animate the scene and provide a sense of scale.
Perelle was a French engraver known for his views of royal residences, formal gardens, fountains and architecture during the reign of Louis XIV. Works such as this provide a visual record of 17th-century French architecture and landscape design, including residences that have since been altered or no longer survive in their original form.
